What is an English Cream Golden Retriever? Simply put, they are Golden Retrievers. It's more of a coined(slang) term used here in the US to identify Golden Retrievers that are lighter in color than the "traditional American" golden color. In Europe, the dogs range from light cream to golden and ALL are referred to as Golden Retrievers. Americans have become fascinated with the lighter cream colored Goldens in recent years. For us, we love the lighter cream color but it's not our number one priority. Here in the US, regardless of color, they are registered in the same AKC registry. Here at Radiant Goldens we are focused on health, temperament, intelligence, and amazing world class championship pedigree's. Our colors will vary but our main focus is health and raising our dogs/puppies holistically. In 1932, the Golden Retriever became part of the AKC, although they have been around much longer in Europe. The AKC changed some of their standards, although, there are more similarities than differences with the American versus English Golden Retrievers. The English tend to have blockier heads which we prefer. Goldens are a wonderful companion. They are sweet, gentle and devoted to their families for life. If you have any additional questions feel free to ask.
Why are some dogs called ENGLISH Golden Retrievers? Our dogs are directly imported from overseas or from imported parents. A generally accepted term for this is English(Europe) as most of them came out of England in the late 1800's from a cross breed by Lord Tweedmouth. The GRCA say's, "These dogs, we are told, were taken to Tweedmouth’s Scottish estate called Guisachan where they were used to hunt deer. Pleased with their skills, the dogs were bred and later an out-cross to a sandy-colored Bloodhound was introduced to reduce size and improve scenting ability. It was said that all Golden Retrievers were direct descendants of this out-cross breeding." Click here, to read more about breed history.
What is Ichthyosis? Here is an explanation by Paw Prints Genetics, "Ichthyosis (golden retriever type) is an inherited condition of the skin affecting dogs. The age of onset and severity of disease are highly variable, however most affected dogs present before one year of age with flaky skin and dull hair. Over time the skin develops a grayish color and appears thick and scaly, especially over the abdomen. The symptoms may progress to severe scaling all over the body, may improve with age, or may come and go over the dog’s lifetime. While the prognosis is generally good for affected dogs, they are at increased risk for skin infections."
Do any of you litters have Ichthyosis? No, we will never pair up a Dam and Sire that would produce anything but a carrier or clear puppy. Our desire is to improve this amazing breed through proper breeding. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions with regard to health testing. See below for a chart explaining Ichthyosis. Currently all our females and males are ICT clear. Meaning all our puppies are clear of ICT through parentage. See our dogs individual pages for their testing.
I think I would rather a female. What are the differences between a male and female? With the Golden Retriever the biggest difference is their size and appearance. The boys will be a little bit larger and have larger blockier heads once full grown(if not pediatrically neutered). All of our dogs are devoted and lovable. Our current male are super calm and sweet. The temperament of our puppies will be dependent on the parents. Most people associate girls with being calmer and more loving, this isn't necessarily true. See article on our BLOG HERE. We find the our current males are calmer and just as lovable as our girls. This is what makes Golden Retrievers so very wonderful. Male or female, you will have a sweet, calm wonderful dog. Socialization and environment will play a very big roll in their development and temperament but once they reach 2 years of age they really mellow.
Are Golden Retrievers good with people of all ages? One of the reasons we chose the Golden Retriever was because of their love for all people. We spend time volunteering in nursing homes and plan to eventually use them for therapy situations within the nursing homes and other environments. Our dogs are exposed daily to young children along with grandma and grandpa in their 80's. They are gentle and loving dogs. They are a great fit for families.
