Starting spring 2020 all litters leaving our home will be microchipped. We have spent hours talking with veterinarians, breeders and microchip companies before we came to the decision to microchip our litters. Once we decided upon microchipping our litters, the main focus was finding a microchip company where Radiant Goldens could remain a "Permanent Rescue Contact" for the life of the dog. After many, many hours we found a great company!
How and where is my puppy microchipped? Our veterinarian implants the chip between the shoulder blades using a needle. Similar to a vaccination for a puppy with regard to what the puppy might feel when implanted.
Is there a downside to microchipping a young puppy? The only possible downside would be the microchip migrating as your dog grows. Most professionals using a microchip scanner are trained to scan the full length and width of the shoulder area. We feel the possibility of a microchip migrating is worth the added benefit of remaining a "Permanent Rescue Contact".
What does "Permanent Rescue Contact" mean? This means Radiant Goldens is on the contact information, as a Permanent Rescue Contact(PRC) along with you(the owner). In the event your dog is separated from you, you will be contacted (via contact information provided on file) and Radiant Goldens will be contacted. If the owner cannot be found, we will make arrangements to bring the dog to us until you are contacted. We remain on file for the life of the dog, even if, you(the owner) transfer the dog to someone else.
What do I need do to do with microchipping? Radiant Goldens takes care of everything. The new owner needs to accept the transfer of the microchip, via email. We have our veterinarian implant the chip, we register the dog and transfer to you online, the day before or the day the puppy goes home. The new owner will receive an email to confirm the transfer. We provide all necessary paperwork specific to the microchip in their "Going Home Puppy Bag".
HERE is a good article on microchipping pros and cons.
